Some thoughts on therapy
In my experience working with women, men, couples, adolescents, and elders and their families from many walks of life, I have been greatly affected and impressed with their capacity to grow and change in the ways they have long-imagined. Negative beliefs about ourselves, our relationships and our place in the world present obstacles that sometimes feel immovable. Often, these obstacles keep us from finding self-acceptance, feelings of self-worth, mutual love and understanding--a general sense of well-being. We may feel prevented from pursuing the kind of life we want for ourselves or sometimes feel stuck in our relationships, halted in our career goals or stifled in our secretly held desires.
I believe giving yourself the opportunity to experience therapy in a safe, supportive and encouraging environment is one of the most useful gifts you can give yourself, your relationship and subsequently all those you come into contact with. In therapy, I will look for and honor your inherent strengths. I will listen with a caring and keen ear to the stories you tell yourself--your fears and hopes about your future. I will assist you in trying to find your own capacity to meet the challenges and joys which always arise in every fulfilling life.
For Couples
I have completed training in level III Gottman Method Couples Therapy, and use the GMCT research-based assessment tools and interventions to assist couples with conflict resolution, more caring communication, enhanced connection and emotional awareness of oneself and one’s partner in the relationship. I am also trained in Bowen Systems Theory as it applies to individuals and couples. This work emphasizes facilitating awareness of how emotional systems function through the identification of both helpful and unhelpful patterns of relating. By focusing on the self rather than other-directed change, all clients can be empowered to improve their relationships.
In working with both couples and individuals I pay close attention to the stories you might be telling yourself about yourself, your partner or significant others, and your place in the world. Some of these stories are old, unhelpful and simply not true—they sometimes come from the family you grew up in, your previous or current partner or society. We will look at these narratives to ensure they accurately reflect your current beliefs, your values, your strengths and that they add deep meaning to your relationship and your life.
