Experience
I have extensive experience working with couples using the Gottman method of therapy. I am presently at the highest level of training (level III) and am seeking certification in this research-based, emotionally focused and clinically sound therapeutic method. I have also provided counseling for women and men of all ages, various ethnicities, races and sexual preferences. Issues I have assisted clients with include: conflicted and distanced relationships; infidelity or other betrayal; lessening the effects of depression and hopelessness through the search for meaning; anxiety, past emotional and physical abuse and neglect; finding a renewed sense of self-worth and self-efficacy (the ability to handle challenges). I also assist clients in learning how to compassionately observe harmful internal and relational patterns in order to ultimately choose healthier and more respectful ways of communicating feelings, needs and desires to self and others. In this work I have acquired a deep and abiding respect for people’s strengths, their inherent wisdom and their desire to grow and change.
Education
I am a licensed Mental Health Counselor in the state of Washington and Oregon. I am also an approved supervisor with the State of Washington, having spent years supervising graduate students in their clinical work. I am a level III Gottman trained, non-certified clinician and am currently seeking full certification.
My Master's Degree is in Psychology, with a concentration in Clinical Mental Health from Antioch University's CACREP accredited program--considered the "Gold Standard" in Counseling Education. I am a Prepare/Enrich Certified Facilitator, working with couples in all stages of relationship. I continually attend educational experiences related to counseling. Educational interests include: the mental health benefits of self-compassion- assisting clients in developing a compassionate and loving internal voice, mindfulness and the practice of Focusing; Bowen family systems; Narrative therapy- noticing the stories we tell ourselves and assisting in exploring and broadening those stories using strength-based approaches in order to attain preferable outcomes.
